Insomnia has serious consequences.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, over 50% of Americans suffer from symptoms of insomnia and sleep-related problems several nights a week. Sleep-deprived drivers cause an estimated 100,000 car accidents each year and 1,500 deaths. And absenteeism from sleepy employees costs the American economy 0 billion in lost productivity each year.

These are just statistics. Insomnia affects quality of life and can make your day just plain miserable.
Some people are genetically prone to sleeping problems. Women, for example, are 40% more likely to suffer from insomnia than men.
Having said this, many of the sleeping problems suffered by Americans are related to lifestyle, poor sleep hygiene and fitness levels. Yes, that's correct, fitness levels. Obese Americans have a higher frequency of obstructive sleep apnea. This is obstruction of the upper airway during sleep, causing repetitive pauses in breathing, which shortens Rapid Eye Movement (REM) cycles and lowers sleep quality.
Fortunately, many causes of insomnia are within your control, and by incorporating good sleep hygiene into your life, you can reduce sleeping problems and the effects they have in your waking hours.
Good sleep hygiene begins with routine. Go to bed at the same time each night, even on weekends. This helps your body maintain its circadian rhythm, or internal clock. Your circadian rhythm governs the release of hormones, metabolism and the bio-chemical cycles of your body. Go to bed and wake at the same time every day and you'll find it easier to sleep and wake refreshed.
Avoid coffee, tea, and energy drinks after mid-afternoon, as they all contain caffeine - a well-known stimulant that inhibits sleep.
The effects of alcohol on sleep are up for debate. Some people find a glass of wine induces sleep, although there is substantial evidence showing that alcohol disrupts the quality of sleep, particularly after four hours.
Some foods, such as turkey and chicken breast, have high levels of the amino acid tryptophan, which is known for its sleep-inducing qualities. A light snack before bed is fine, but avoid large meals within several hours of sleep, as they can take hours to digest. Spicy foods can make it difficult to sleep. And avoid foods that are high in sugar before bed, as the excessive calories aren't burned at the same rate as they are during the day, leading to weight gain.
Make your bedroom a sanctuary for sleep. Keep it dark and cool. If possible, keep televisions, computers and other distractions from sleep in another room. Use your bed only for sex and sleep, and invest in a durable set of heavy, light-blocking blinds to keep out early morning light during summer.
Finally, have a quality sleep enhancer close by, as back-up for those nights when it's difficult to sleep.
Traditional sleeping pills are available only through a doctor and often produce adverse side effects like dry mouth, loss of motor skills and a hangover feeling in the morning. What's worse, sleeping pills can be highly addictive and come with the risk of overdose.
A safer and more effective alternative is Alteril. Comprised of some of the most effective natural sleep inducers, including tryptophan, melatonin, theanine and valerian, Alteril is a powerful natural sleep aid that produces deep, long-lasting and refreshing sleep without the nasty side effects of sleeping pills. That can be very helpful on those long, painful nights when it's difficult to sleep!
